SOCIAL ACTION @TYWLS 2014
Social Action Week is here! During the week, the Student government and Ms. Panday have decided to focus on three areas of interest to our school community: The kidnapping crisis in Nigeria, LGBTQ issues, and taking responsibility for the appearance of our building and grounds.
Tuesday- Four Pillars Murals
Rationale: An important part of Social Action week is making connections between what we do in our building and the local community. This lesson allows students to brainstorm in small groups and come to a consensus as a class as they decide how to creatively incorporate their ideas into a cohesive mural.
Objective: How can students create a mural to reflect the TYWLS Queens Four Pillars?
Do Now: How do we experience and develop the pillars of Leadership, STEM, College Bound, and Health & Wellness at TYWLS? Be specific!
Procedure: 1. Do Now
2. Solicit responses to the Do Now.
3. Explain to the students that this week they will create chalk murals depicting our Four Pillars to the community. In the following days, each advisory will get an opportunity to create a mural directly on the wall and/or the courtyard floor of the front of the building.
4. Instruct student groups to draft mural ideas relating to Leadership, STEM, College Bound, and Health & Wellness. They can use pencil and loose leaf paper. The key is to get together and brainstorm the ideas.
5. Conduct a brief gallery walk of the ideas. Bring the whole class together to collectively brainstorm ways to incorporate as many ideas as possible into a cohesive mural.
6. Remind students that they will be allowed to create the murals according to the following mural schedule

Student Government has decided to focus on four main areas for Social Action Week:
1. LGBTQ/Pink Triangle- Students will read articles, participate in discussions, analyze documentary videos, and take polls about these important topics. 2. Nigerian Kidnapping/ Big Back Our Girls- To continue building on the great work of our advisories, the Student Government will provide editorials and discussion prompts about this issue. The plan will foster critical thinking, discussion, and all allow for action plans. 3. Since Social Action Week is all about making connections within the school community and life beyond our walls, the Student Government will provide time, space, and materials for advisories to draft and create sidewalk chalk murals in front of the school. The murals will creatively display our commitment to the Four Pillars of Leadership, STEM, College Bound, and Health & Wellness. Detailed instructions and schedules will be sent to advisors. 4. The Student Government loves the fact that our school has a small garden area in front of the school. But, it needs a hug! This final component of Social Action Week will be a way to jumpstart the gardening/beautification of this area. We don't plan on having a finished product by the end of this week, but perhaps we can plant a seed that will bloom by the end of June. |
TYWLS students were devastated by the news of the abduction of school girls in Nigeria. They felt a connection because of their passion for female education and wanted to show their support.
#BringBackOurGirls By Tyneicia Gibson Bring back our girls, The hashtag is trending But what’s really happening If our request is still pending? Those are my sisters Honest and true We have to stick together If this problem we wish to get through Bring back our girls For they’ve done nothing You mad cause women Have more talents to bring? Each girl that’s taken Breaks my heart And you selling them for $12 dollars At you towns local market? Bring back our girls And restore our hearts at least And to my sisters that may have died Rest In Peace. |
